LYSMimpactΦ

mathematics impacting thinking

Michele ABRUSCI (Roma 3) and Thierry PAUL (LYSM) org.

LYSMimpactΦ is a monthly seminar which aims to take a pragmatic look at the general question of the impact of mathematics on philosophy and more generally cultural thinking. By pragmatic, we mean the fact that the question will be approached not theoretically and for its own sake, but rather through examples, whether linked to authors or to the emergence of new or not mathematical methods or theories and new ways of thinking.

Silk manifolds

Abstract:  “Mathematicians are people who prove theorems” is a definition that suits well. But theorems come from ideas, patterns, images etc…… Artists are people that create art”. But “art” comes from ideas, pattern images, etc… Today’s game consists in finding analogies that allow us to appreciate mathematics, while reading “art realisations” and appreciate art while seeing it with the eye of the mathematician. The audience will judge if this raises or not philosophical questions.
